Humanity Loses Thousands - Nationwide Automobile Mileage and Emissions Standards

The New York Times Editorial "The Earth Wins One" is so rife with inaccuracies and dangerous myths that I almost couldn't finish reading it. The writer seems to think that President Barack Obama's new nationwide automobile mileage and emissions standards will save the planet, and reduce American dependence on foreign oil.

To answer the second part of that, the best way to reduce American dependence on foreign oil is to produce more domestic oil. Simple as that. Drill local, add more product to the global market, add a new competitor (us), and drop taxes on sales in America to encourage the domestic oil sales to Americans, and the need for foreign oil is abated.

The writer of this editorial may be fairly young, or has a poor memory, because the person also doesn't realize that Obama's new standards are not so new. Similar standards were passed in the 1970s, and rather than result in a drop of oil usage, armed with cars that received better mileage enabled Americans to drive farther, and more often for the same amount of money. In the long run, oil use rose, as did the number of deaths in the small, lighter death traps Detroit was calling automobiles.

The New York Times editorial also declares how important it is to limit greenhouse gases. I hate to break it to you, NYT writer, but the human contribution to the overall population of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is akin to a penny being added to a multi-trillion dollar bank account. The heaviest polluters of greenhouse gases are volcanoes and the oceans - and until you find a way to control them with liberty killing regulations, they will keep on spewing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere until the end of time. Besides, global warming is a natural phenomenon that is currently shifting into a cooling trend.

The writer is also excited about Obama's plan being much like the standards in California - the same standards that are among the many factors killing the economy, forcing people to leave the state, and breaking the backs of the remaining drivers. Trust me, I live in California, and the emissions standards are not considered to be wonderfully green by my statewide neighbors - we just consider it all too expensive and unreasonable.

Americans do not wish to buy these cracker-boxes that the United States Government is pushing Detroit to produce, either. The biggest sellers are SUVs and trucks, for a reason.

Let's see you pull that boat with your Chevy Volt.

I can appreciate your desire to save the planet. It seems noble on the surface. And I agree, we should be good stewards of the planet. The huge lie you have fallen for with gullible idiocy is not about the environment, though. It is about government control through environmental regulations. Besides, with the lighter, less than crash-worthy vehicles on the road, not only does the Earth not win, but humanity loses. After all, the standards will result ultimately in a real payment of thousands of American lives. The editorial in The New York Times is titled, "The Earth Wins One." It should have been named "Humanity Loses Thousands of Lives."
