Honduras coup d'etat - The Arrest of President Manuel Zelaya

The Associated Press is reporting that a bunch of soldiers arrested Honduran President Manuel Zelaya this morning. They disarmed his security guards after surrounding his residence in an action that may be a coup.

Unrest has been brewing for a while, partially due to the fact that Zelaya has been trying to push through a new constitution that would enable the president to be re-elected. The referendum for this change in the constitution was supposed to be held today despite Honduran Supreme Court justices, and other government officials, claiming the referendum is illegal.

Last Thursday, Zeyala fired the head of the Honduran military, a move that many critics are calling an overstep of authority.

Zeyala is a Leftist that is supported by Castro of Cuba, and Chavez of Venezuela. Honduras is a small, Central American country north of Nicaragua, with El Salvador to the west, and is no stranger to political turmoil.
