Senate Parlimentarian Trick

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The first honest leftist amendment, proposed by Senator Bernard Sanders, independent Marxist of Vermont, would create a fully government-run health care system.

Senator Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, demanded it be read aloud to the Senate so that the true nature of the leftist's intentions could be heard, and so that the vote for Obamacare would be delayed until after the holiday.

The amendment, a full 767 pages, was long enough to delay the vote should it be read in its entirety, and grind the Democrat's plans to a halt for at least a day.

Sanders withdrew the amendment, and the Parlimentarian halted the reading.

Except, the Parlimentarian's decision, under the orders of Harry Reid, was against Senate rules.

It is not the parlimentarian's job to stop something that is happening within the arena of the rules. It is the parlimentarian's job to make sure everything is running according to the rules. The only way the reading could be stopped, if they were to follow Senate rules, was by a majority vote.

Then again, is it any surprise that once again the left is not following the rules, and is stooping to any kind of unethical actions to stop their opposition?
