Gun Confiscation in Shreveport, Louisiana

By Douglas V. Gibbs

It was only a routine traffic stop for failure of using a turn signal, right? Except in this instance the police officer failed to ask anything about the driver's improper use, or lack of use, of his turn signal. Instead, after noticing a couple pro-gun bumper stickers in the back window of his truck, the officers asked if he had a gun, where the gun was, if he was a member of pro-gun organizations, and then confiscated his weapon.

No requests for a driver's license, proof of insurance, or vehicle registration -- and no discussion of a turn signal.

The driver was honest, said he was a gun owner, and then the officer searched his car without permission and confiscated his gun.

Note, however, that this happened in the State of Louisiana where residents are allowed to drive with loaded weapons in their vehicles. Even more interesting is that the driver also possessed a concealed carry license!

When the citizen later complained to the mayor about the incident, the mayor of Shreveport was elated, telling the gun owner that he had been "served well, protected well, and even got a consideration that maybe [he] should not have gotten."

Whether or not the city can get away with this will depend on the State Constitution, and the decision the Supreme Court comes to regarding the gun ban in Chicago, Illinois.

Also, remember this: the first thing tyrannies do when a dictator takes office is confiscate the weapons. . . and also note that the American Revolution heard the first shot ring out at Lexington, because the British were on their way to Concord to confiscate weapons.

If you want mine, I will give them to you . . . bullets first.
