Another Indonesia Earthquake

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Indonesia was put under a tsunami watch after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit northern Sumatra. Last December's quake that killed over 200,000 people struck the same area.

The quake struck at 5:15 a.m. and was centered 125 miles northwest of Sibolga in Sumatra at a depth of 28.6 miles. It was thought earlier the quake measured 7.8.

The earthquake was so powerful that residents in the nation of Malaysia also felt the rumbling.

At least five strong aftershocks have struck since the earthquake, measuring up to 5.2.

The region suffered a 9.2 magnitude quake that killed over 230,000 people in 2004 from the resulting tsunami.
