BP Frantically working to cap oil well

By Douglas V. Gibbs

BP is racing to get this "cap the well" job done as quickly as possible. I don't blame them. But their true reasons may not sit well with most folks. Their efforts are not necessarily because they are trying to save the environment from more oil in the ocean. Instead, it is becoming apparent that they would really like to have some good news for their stockholders, since the quarterly report is coming up on the 27th, and Obama is meeting with the British Prime Minister on the 20th.

I don't think we should be demonizing BP, but I surely don't think they are complete angels, either. BP is a business, and business decisions in regards to this spill are quite predictable. My beef, however, is with the federal government's attempt to act as the hall monitor, rather than becoming a partner in working to solve the problem.
