Murrieta To Pursue E-Verify

By Douglas V. Gibbs

A groundswell has begun in Southwest Riverside County, and the City of Murrieta has decided to hop aboard.

In tonight's City Council Meeting I spoke along with a dozen, or so, other folks in the hopes of convincing the Murrieta City Council to introduce an ordinance that would utilize the E-Verify worker eligibility system, and integrate it into the city's Business License.

Two of the five council members wished to be careful, and maybe even wait on the proposal. Three other members believed Murrieta should institute a mandatory E-Verify ordinance that would mandate that all businesses in Murrieta use the system, or be at risk of having their Business License revoked, and be possibly fined.

The Ninth Circuit Court has recently ruled that local jurisdictions can use E-Verify, and unless the Supreme Court decides otherwise in a case that is working its way to the high court, any E-Verify ordinance should be legal.

By the end of the evening, the City Council voted unanimously to begin the process, and the city attorney indicated that she should have an ordinance ready by the first part of October.

Murrieta joins other local cities in implementing E-Verify. Menifee, Temecula, and Lake Elsinore, to name a few, have already passed an ordinance. Southwest Riverside County is beginning a groundswell of local enforcement of immigration laws - will the rest of Southern California follow?
