Dallas Cowboys Hurd Penalized for Texas Longhorn Salute

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The No Fun League is at it again, and their ridiculous actions reminds us of the idiocy that infects us not only in the football world, but as a society. I don't know if it is political correctness, or truly an attempt to protect the poor fragile football players (trimmed in pink, of late) from uncalled-for taunting through those horribly destructive displays of excessive celebration after a score.

For you liberal leftists, that was sarcasm, so don't get your BVDs all up in a bunch.

The situation I am referring to is Sunday's celebration penalty against Sam Hurd of the Dallas Cowboys because he joined teammate, and University of Texas alumni, Roy Williams in holding up a "Hook "Em Horns" salute after a touchdown. The crime? Sam Hurd is no Longhorn, he attended Northern Illinois University - well, okay, that wasn't the real reason, the official reason is that by joining Williams, Hurd participated in a "joint celebration."

EEEEEK! Not the dreaded JOINT CELEBRATION!

The leapfrogging that happened before the salute was not considered excessive, however. Just players being players, I guess.

But in reality, it wasn't a join celebration, because Hurd held up the Longhorn salute wrong. His thumb is sticking out, which is clearly a cross between "Hook 'Em Horns," and "Hang Loose, Dude."

Besides, isn't the definition of a joint celebration something that is pre-planned? And if it had been pre-planned, don't you think that Williams would have instructed Hurd to keep his thumb in during the salute?

Jeez, pretty soon it'll be against the rules for more than one player to smile after a touchdown. Too many smiles might be considered a joint show of happiness, you know, and professional football can't possibly allow any happiness among the players. It might make the other team feel sad.

Oh, the horror of it all!
