Letting Non-Citizens Vote

By Douglas V. Gibbs

When my wife naturalized, the main reason for her decision was so that she could vote. Voting is an important aspect of American citizenship.

On November 2nd, residents of Portland, Maine will vote on a proposal to give legal residents who are not U.S. citizens the right to vote in local elections, joining places like San Francisco and Chicago that have already loosened the rules or are considering it.

Let me be blunt. You want to vote, make the commitment to America. . . become a citizen. If you are unwilling to become a citizen, then you should not be afforded the right to vote.

This is another way of killing American sovereignty by cheapening the privilege of being an American citizen.
