DREAM Act, 4th Down and Short

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The DREAM Act is a liberal favorite. It promises to make them look compassionate, while also adding voters to their Hispanic voting base. They desperately wish to get the bill passed into law. However, the defense against the DREAM Act is populated by most of America. . . but don't tell that to the Democrats, they won't believe you.

The Act, if passed into law, would allow students who have lived in America for five years to obtain a green card after they attend college or serve in the military. In other words, it is an amnesty program that gives citizenship to these illegal immigrants.

Admittedly, employers are the number-one contributor to illegal immigration, hence the importance of pushing programs like E-Verify. But the politicians, of both parties, have become accessories. The almighty rulers in Washington, who seems to have forgotten who they work for, have decided it is in the best interest of this country to reward those who are here illegally. They wish to pander to the illegal population and their supporters, but their reasons have nothing to do with compassion, like they claim. The amnesty peddlers are chasing the DREAM Act for votes, power, and class-warfare politics. By following this line of thinking, however, the pro-amnesty politicians are sending mixed signals, causing some people to think there are long-term benefits for coming here illegally.

Gaining admission into some colleges is difficult enough, already. There are limited spots available. The DREAM Act would reduce the slots for legal residents and deny many Americans the opportunity for a college education. What this means is that the DREAM Act not only rewards people for breaking the law, but then also turns around and penalizes those who are here as born citizens, and those that immigrated here legally. And understand that there are a lot of foreign nationals that go to college in this country, but we don't jump to offer them legal status or citizenship. However, by not following the rules, by breaking the law, we are going to bend over backwards for the illegal aliens. What kind of insanity is that?

Allowing illegal aliens, per the DREAM Act, to receive a green card after serving in the military means that the proponents of this madness also believes that non-citizens should serve in the military. But aren't these the same people that have said that civilian employers need to stop hiring these people? Since when is it a good idea for the government to hire people that have violated the law, and to allow people who have no allegiance to this nation to serve in its military? Would you want your life to be in the hands of a soldier with a divided alliance, or no alliance to America?

To stop illegal immigration, one of the keys is the E-Verify system. The system is available to all, anyone can use it. A bill with E-Verify will do more to stop the flow of illegal immigrants than any DREAM Act that panders to these law breakers.

E-Verify is an internet-based system that allows an employer, using information reported on an employee's form, to determine the eligibility of that employee to work in the United States. For most employers, the use of E-Verify is voluntary and limited to new hires only. However, currently, every federal government agency must use E-Verify. The Obama administration has mandated that all contractors with the Federal Government use this system. Many cities are passing ordinances requiring employers in the city to use E-Verify. And do you know what's happening in those cities? The illegal aliens are deporting themselves.

The Democrats, and their Republican DREAM Act allies, have determined that following E-Verify, and abandoning amnesty, could place their power in jeopardy. They want the votes, and they have determined that the fastest growing voting group is Hispanics. Therefore, they are pushing the DREAM Act anyway, despite the madness of it, and despite the will of the people. They don't care about American objections. Washington Democrats know that they have lost the House of Representatives, and now push has come to shove. It is 4th Down and short, less than two weeks left before Christmas break begins, so they plan to push forth this monstrosity, despite public opinion being against it. They don't care that the DREAM Act sends the signal that the way you become an American is to break the law. All the politicians care about is class warfare, and maintaining their power, and they are willing to use illegal aliens, and the Hispanic population, as pawns in their elitist game of power to achieve their political goals.
