Federal Government To Regulate Bake Sales?

By Douglas V. Gibbs

In an effort to create a master race of liberal Americans that are, apparently, not overweight, a child nutrition bill championed by the first lady is on the barbie that, after Obama signs it, gives the federal government the power to limit school bake sales and other fundraisers that health advocates say sometimes replace wholesome meals in the lunchroom.

Who do these people think they are? Not only is it an individual's right to eat the way they desire, but it sure seems strange that these liberal left champions of tolerance are so quick to condemn people that are heavier than the liberal leftists desire them to be, and then demand these people to change who they are. (Note to gay agenda: Conservatives never recommended a law be passed to change who you are, only that you don't change what marriage is.)

Talk about taking government control to new heights.

“This could be a real train wreck for school districts,” Lucy Gettman of the National School Boards Association said Friday, a day after the House cleared the bill. “The federal government should not be in the business of regulating this kind of activity at the local level.”

The legislation is a part of first lady Michelle Obama’s campaign to stem childhood obesity. She has decided that you must be the wait she deems acceptable, and if you don't like it, the government will force you to change your diet so that you meet Michelle Obama's approval.

I wonder if Obama means "Lenin" in Kenyan.

The new law will also provides more meals at school for needy kids, which means the government believes that parents are willing to allow their own children to starve, and that mama government must intercede to teach more members of the population the joys of becoming a slave to federal entitlement programs. Oh, and by the way, those meals at schools will even include dinner!

The new law will also direct the Agriculture Department to write guidelines to make those meals healthier, because obviously parents don't know how to properly feed their children either. . . never mind the thousands of years of children surviving being raised by their (gasp!) parents.

The language in the law is broad enough that the Executive Branch will even have the power to ban bake sales (despite Secretary Tom Vilsack's promise not to do that. . . yeah, there's a lot of things Democrats promise not to do. . . remember, liberals are habitual liars).

Margo Wootan of the Center for Science in the Public Interest says the bill is aimed at curbing daily or weekly bake sales or pizza fundraisers that become a regular part of kids’ lunchtime routines. She says selling junk food can easily be substituted with nonfood fundraisers. Never mind the fact that it has been proven that obesity is caused by calorie intake, not the type of food you eat. The Twinkie Diet proved that without question.

So let the kids eat pizza and doughnuts. All a parent has to do is make sure the kids don't take in more calories than they burn. . . if they wish. You know, it's their choice. . . Free country, and all that.

Under the new rules under the new law, bake sales cannot be held on school grounds unless the items meet nutrition standards that specifically limit portion sizes, fat content, sodium and sugars.

Can anyone say food-fascists?
