Duke Snider, Hall of Fame Dodger in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, Dead at 84

Duke Snider was an eight-time All-Star, as well as a member of the Dodgers baseball team in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. He was a member of Brooklyn's only World Series winner, as well as being a part of six National League championships.

The centerfielder's lifetime 407 home runs, 389 of them with the Dodgers, remains the most home runs by any member of the Dodgers organization in history. His lifetime batting average was .295.

The Duke of Flatbush died today at the age of 84.

He will be missed.

I got to read about the Duke and his teammates when I was young, since my dad had (and might still have) a copy of Roger Kahn's "The Boys of Summer". When I first started following major league baseball, Duke had retired and his rivals Willie (whose Giants had moved to SF) and Mickey were on their last legs. Even a Yankees fan like me believes that the '47-'55 Dodgers are one of more memorable teams in baseball history.
