Unions are for Unions

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Unions tell us that they are for the workers. Problem is, America does not have workers. We have employees, and entrepreneurs. Besides, when the unions tell you they are for the workers, they lie. Unions are only for the unions.

The birth of unions in America seems noble enough. They fought for worker's rights, they say, and I agree that some important regulations regarding creating a safe working environment came out of it. Of course, the federal regulations are unconstitutional - it should have been the states that came up with laws to protect the laborers of America - but they seemed to do the "workers" good on the surface anyhow. However, what the unions have become is not much different from what politicians have become. Politicians have stopped being for the people like the unions have stopped being for the workers. In both cases, what they have become is a serious danger to the free society that is the United States of America.

Like the politicians, the unions choose to force their bidding through deceptive means. One such example, of which both the politicians and unions have their hand in, is a monstrosity called the "Employee Free Choice Act."

The leftists have tried and tried to push the Employee Free Choice Act, but what they don't tell you is that it has nothing to do with free choice. In fact, it takes away free choice of the individual, so that the unions can gain more power. After all, the unions aren't for the workers. The unions are for the unions.

The Employee Free Choice Act eliminates secret ballot elections, enabling the opportunity for the thugs to know who are the dissenters, so that they can bully the opposition to vote the way the union desires.

An added bonus for the power hungry unions is that under the Employee Free Choice Act the unions wouldn't even have to win in an election in order to represent the workers. Instead, union representatives could simply collect signatures from the workers until they had a majority.

Intimidation is the way of the unions.

Unions wish to take away freedom from the workers. The protests in Wisconsin showed us how the union thugs feel about any opposition. They shipped in protesters from out of state, used death threats, harassment, and children to try to get their way.

Power is the reason the unions reacted, not for the sake of the workers.

Problem is, there is not enough money left to fund the union's demands. Skyrocketing pension costs, and incredible benefits packages for union members, is bankrupting governments. Public labor unions have been siphoning off wealth created by others, while giving nothing back except expenses.

Now, the country is facing a spending crisis, and the only way to stop the downward spiral is to address the astronomical spending created by the public sector labor unions.

Until we realize that the unions are for the unions, and as in Wisconsin, moves must be taken to limit their reach, our economy remains at risk.
