The Folly of Infrastructure Jobs/Public Works Projects

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Should State governments take care of infrastructure work every once in a while? Of course. Repairs of our infrastructure is necessary sometimes. But, as per the Constitution, they are up to the States to take care of, not the federal government.

In Obama's jobs bill, however, Obama pushes for New-Deal-style public works projects. The problem is, as shown under FDR when Roosevelt's Keynesian strategies actually lengthened the Great Depression in the U.S. by seven years, infrastructure jobs paid by federal tax dollars does little to improve the economy. In fact, the federal spending not only does nothing for the economy, they actually hurt the situation in the long run.

Federally funded infrastructure programs during a time of economic duress produces nothing, and are only temporary. A few people for a short moment may benefit, but nothing lasting ever comes out of these short-sighted programs.

Obama doesn't get it. He thinks government creates jobs, creates wealth, and fixes economies. . . when in reality government does nothing of the sort. The only thing the government can do right now to help the economy is quit spending at these ungodly levels, for it is devaluing the dollar, and get the hell out of the way so that the private sector can grow the economy through supply-side economics.
