Podcast for Saturday Constitution Speaker with guest Melissa Melendez

On Saturday my Constitution Speaker radio program was joined by Melissa Melendez, Candidate for California's 67th Assembly District. During the interview we discussed Melissa's views on state issues like the Dream Act, Brown's pension reform, and SB 48 FAIR Education Act, as well as local issues regarding redevelopment funds, city economics, the growth of Southwest Riverside County including the incorporation of a number of cities, and how those cities incorporating affects the dynamics of local politics.

After my interview of Melissa Melendez, I answered the question posed by Daniel of San Bernardino: "People keep complaining about Obama's eligibility even after he produced a birth certificate proving he was born in Hawaii. Wasn't that proof enough to shut the birthers up? Besides, I didn't hear them complaining about McCain being born in Panama, or Romney being a dual-citizen of Mexico."

In the 5 Big Stories of the Week, the below issues were discussed with my good friend, JASmius:

5 Big Stories of the Week, November 19, 2011

5. Obama’s Kiss for Hu

4. Political Positioning of Keystone Oil Pipeline

3. Cal State Tuition Hike Protest Becomes Violent

2. White House Shooter - Occupy Member, Threat to Obama

1. House Fails to Pass Proposal for Balanced Budget Amendment

And of course we wrapped it all up with our Nuts and Nuggets segment:

Nut: London, England for ripping into London, Ontario, Canada for naming its minor league baseball team “The Rippers.”

Article in the USA Today:

When you name your baseball team the Rippers and you're from London, you might expect some blowback.

Even if its London, Ontario and you claim there is no connection to Jack the Ripper.

Joe Belanger of the London Free Press reports the team in the Frontier Baseball League unveiled the name on "Purple Day" a day designated by London Abused Women's Centre to raise awareness for violence against women.

However, Rippers president David Martin said the mascot is Diamond Jack, a hockey player who finds he can "rip" the cover off of baseballs.

London mayor Joe Fontana asked the team to change the name.

-- USA Today

Are we so sensitive that a historical figure, even one as notorious as Jack the Ripper, cannot be used for the name of a baseball team . . . especially with the pun involved regarding the word "ripper?"

Nugget: Newt Gingrich: "I'm very open about the fact that I've had moments in my life that I regret.”

We all have baggage. It is refreshing that a candidate for president admits his failings, and that he regrets those mistakes. That gives me the feeling that he has learned from his mistakes as well. I am not completely sure the transformation of Newt from foul-up to star is complete, however. Does he really believe his own bull crap? Or must we shy away from someone who has a strong history of rubbing elbows with the establishment?
