Smart Meters Being Removed in California

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Smart Meters are touted as being the wave of the future. The high tech electricity meters are the foundation of a newer energy grid that is supposed to be more efficient and able to guard against waste. The devices provide real time information to the energy providers through a set-up not unlike having a mobile cell phone in your meter. The claim is that the device helps the energy provider bill more correctly, identify power problems more easily and quickly, and eliminate the need for the carbon unfriendly analog meter reader.

Carbon unfriendly? That would be a concern if the idea of man-made global warming wasn't a myth.

But, hey, even if you take the environmental garbage out of the equation, in the long run using technology to our advantage is good, isn't it? Won't it mean better energy usage, and lower bills?

Not necessarily.

An even more insidious aspect of smart meters is that it will give the provider more control over your usage. As an advocate for liberty, that doesn't sit well with me either.

The push for smart meters is tied into the push for green technology. Solar power, hydro power, wind power, and electric cars aren't working very efficiently, right now. There are numerous safety issues rising due to fires caused by charging stations and electric cars, and this is becoming a major concern. The greenies are working desperately to find a solution to their little problem of inefficiency, high cost, windmills killing birds, and fires caused by the push for electric cars. They believe a smarter grid is the answer, and Smart Meters are at the foundation of that grid. Smart Meters would allow for better centralized energy management, because you people, according to the statists, are too stupid to manage your energy wisely - so some faceless member of the centralized system sitting at some huge panel of lights and buttons must do it for you. Besides, if your car, plugged into the charging station, catches fire, then the provider would be able to shut off your power more quickly. Reassuring, isn't it?

The dangers of smart meters and green technology are not the concerns of these people. Remember, they think they can save the planet, and that takes priority over any freedoms, or the safety of the individual. They figure they will save the planet despite you, and your petty little desire for liberty.

And all of this stems from their unproven idea that man-made global warming is destroying the planet. Despite proof against their cultish alter of global warming, and despite that it is proven that all of these environmental movements and causes are purely political in nature, and is not a science issue as much as they claim it is, these greenies keep trying to push this garbage on the American People. The science aspect of man-made global warming is fraudulent. It is a great big hoax. It's a political issue and it's an international left-wing hoax.

In North Carolina, the plug-n electric vehicle pilots have become so unsafe that the charging stations installed in homes are being put out of service. They are unsafe to use. The powers-that-be are shutting them down.

Are those greenies going to have to go out and buy a car with an internal combustion engine? Will they hold their head in shame because they are, in their mind, contributing to destroying the planet for driving some gas powered car?

Never mind that the Nissan Leaf, the only purely electric car out there by a major producer, has been determined to be a complete failure, even according to those that so desperately want it to work. The car is a piece of junk. Nobody but those far left crazies are willing to buy it, and even they are saying the thing is not what they expected.

It must really suck to be one of those misguided environmental wackos right about now.

Oh, and the failed vehicle by Nissan has been backed up by the taxpayers with a $1.4 billion loan. That way Nissan can mass produce the hunks of junk. That's not even counting the rest of the money you taxpayers are on the hook for. After all, the Department of Energy pours billions of taxpayer dollars into battery storage research and subsidizing 'renewable' energy companies for failed wind and solar technologies. The federal government has dumped millions of dollars into the rollout of chargers for the Nissans and Volts but they can't be used because they keep starting fires. The federal government spending on all of this is a complete waste of your dollars.

Besides, there is no market for them. The government can't create a market for any of this green technology crap, especially when they are a great big failure. The free market works without the government intruding, not with intrusion. So, if people don't want the cars, quit producing them. If they don't want wind mills, quit spinning them. The whole green industry is a complete waste of money, and resources.

Which brings us back around to the Smart Meters.

PG&E is a huge electricity company in Northern California. They were in the process of entering the final phase of deploying the wireless smart meters when suddenly they were forced to change course. The smart meters, it seems, are not working out so well, so they are now returning to the trusty ol' analog version. Millions of Californians are unhappy with their new wireless meters, and are demanding that they not only get their analogs returned immediately, but that it be done at no cost.

Promises ranging from lower utility bills to enhanced renewable generation capacity have failed to materialize. There have been widespread reports of higher bills, privacy violations, fires and explosions, and commonly reported health impacts such as headaches, nausea, tinnitus, and heart problems associated with powerful wireless transmissions.

Never mind that the federal energy department's program (and the whole agency, for that matter) is unconstitutional and a dangerous assault on people in their own homes and neighborhoods. Dozens of people have been detained or arrested for peaceful civil disobedience against the smart meters, and even simply for speaking out against the deployments of the smart meters.

In California, more than 47 cities and counties have demanded a halt to installation. Local laws are being passed prohibiting the controversial technology. There has been repeated gas explosions, safety breaches at nuclear reactors, and a rate structure that results in higher bills. California’s smart meter nightmare is not going unnoticed, either. Watching the failed experiment in California has led to utilities around the world to place their smart meter plans on hold. In Nevada, there has been a call for investigations into the health effects and other smart meter problems.

Last month PG&E re-installed a classic spinning disc analog meter in Santa Cruz, California because resident Caitlin Phillips claimed she had been suffering headaches and other symptoms because of her smart meter. California Public Utilities Commission President Michael Peevey recently told members of the public that the utility "will provide for you to go back to the analog meter if that’s your choice."

Caitlin went on to say that she originally requested that PG&E not install a smart meter at her home. In fact, she asked the installer to get off her property and not install. However, after returning home after being out, she discovered a smart meter had been installed on her house against her wishes. That night, the severe anxiety, headache, and buzzing in her teeth set in, and she believed the new smart meter on the other side of the wall from her bed was the culprit.

After reporting her situation to PG&E, and the California Public Utilities Commission, both refused to rectify it. After the symptoms persisted, Caitlin sought assistance, and found it with the Scotts Valley based group Stop Smart Meters! who provided an analog meter and referred her to a professional who could help her remove her smart meter. As soon as the analog was installed, Caitlin’s symptoms disappeared.

Outraged, Caitlin went to San Francisco to speak at a commission meeting. A week later, PG&E crews were at her house replacing her temporary analog meter with a brand new official PG&E analog meter.

Many citizens still suffer health difficulties from the smart meters, yet the utility providers in many areas still refuse to remove the harmful meters upon request.

Stop Smart Meters! is working to change that. Their efforts have resulted in utility providers responding promptly to all requests that analogs be returned. Others have used independent professionals to remove unwanted smart meters from their homes, a reasonable action well within their legal rights.

Some have accused such actions as being "tampering." Is it tampering when one's family's health is at risk? Should the government be allowed to force us to accept something that we have reservations about because "they" think it is for our own good, or because it makes "their" job a little easier? Should we say nothing when the government wishes to impose on us something that we believe infringes on some of our freedoms?

Digital meters that are “wireless-ready” have also been associated with health problems from “dirty electricity” frequencies that pass into a home via the electrical wiring.

Communities have the right to retain analog meters if they wish. The government has no authority to force them on anyone.
