Gunmen in Mexico Attack U.S. Diplomatic Vehicle

By Douglas V. Gibbs

One wonders if the attack on an American vehicle just south of Mexico City is an example of how truly the violent element of the world dislikes any symbol of America. In fact, let's take it a step further. Is the attack by unknown gunmen on an American diplomatic vehicle in Mexico an example of the mindset of the illegal aliens as well?

One wonders.

If I was a liberal I would be very concerned. After all, the American liberal does not like it when elements around the world does not like the United States. They are willing to bend over backwards to appease those that dislike us. It is their goal to downsize the influence of the United States, to relegate us to just another nation at the global table, so that we fit in. The fact that some unidentified gunmen went after a diplomatic vehicle in Mexico makes the liberal want to apologize for something, because in their mindset the gunmen must have been mad at us for something we did.

What is worse, the gunmen were inside what was described as a Mexican federal police vehicle, and fired upon a U.S. Embassy vehicle, resulting in the injury of two Americans. Mexico's federal police said that its personnel were not involved in the shooting. Their forces appeared at the scene only after the shooting to secure the perimeter.

Will the Obama administration work to discover who was behind this atrocity?

The Obama administration will put out some generic statement about how horrible it was, and then under his breath will seek to apologize, or cower in the corner.

As a conservative, I am concerned about this attack against Americans in Mexico, but not in the same way the liberal left is. Evil exists in the world. There are bad people in the world, and it has nothing to do with the fact that the United States is exceptional. Yes, their sights are aimed at us because we are exceptional, but that is normal. Human evil always targets either the weakest, or the strongest and richest. They attack us because we are strong, and they want us to cower. They want us to decide that the only way to stop being attacked is to bow down and cower.

That is not the American Way.

As a nation we have achieved our status in the world because we have refused to be like the rest of the world from the beginning. Our system was designed to be different from Europe's on purpose. The Europeans scoffed at the new country across the Atlantic because they did not believe self-governance is possible. They believed only a ruling elite could maintain order.

America's republican political system, the sovereignty of the States, and our free market economic system is the engine that made this nation great, and we should not be ashamed of that greatness. It is not arrogance, as Obama says, for us to believe in our exceptionalism. We are exceptional because we are the exception to the rule. We are great because we are different, and because we are good.

When the violent element of the world takes a shot at us, like in Mexico, we must remember why. It is not because of the reasons the Left says, but because evil exists. There is no apology that stops the violence. In the end, it will be victory that stops the violence. And then, after that victory, another evil will rise up. That is the way of humanity, unfortunately.

We can't make the rest of the world like us, but we can continue to be the shining beacon on the hill, burning bright as an example of what a good and moral nation can truly be. We can be the example, the standard that the rest of the world wants to be more like. In that way, we can spread our model of republicanism.

In the end, the only ones that can defeat us is ourselves.
