Romney Right About Those Dependent Upon Government

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Politics has become about buying votes, and the Democrats have become masters at it. They use gifts from the treasury as a carrot on a stick, and then threaten that if Republicans win, the GOP will take away all of the freebies from the people they get from the supposedly benevolent government.

Never mind the culture of dependency it creates, or the fact that it is economically unsustainable and will eventually collapse our system if not brought under control.

Romney understands this, saying at a reception with donors that "almost half of Americans are dependent upon government, and are likely to support President Obama because they believe they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.”

The liberal left called the remarks insensitive, while conservatives call America's dependency upon the government a sad reality that must be stopped.

After being attacked by the liberal media over his remarks, Romney responded that the remarks were “not elegantly stated” but stood by them and said they were similar to remarks he has made in public. “I’m speaking off the cuff in response to a question,” he explained.

The liberal media released the tapes of the comments by Romney thinking that it would hurt him, but in realty, Americans realize that the war on poverty is a failure, and has actually created more poverty. Romney has not written off 47 percent of the people as the Obama Campaign is claiming, but is instead inviting these people to throw off the shackles of government dependence, and join the American Dream that can be achieved by hard work, self-reliance, and personal responsibility. On the same token, he can't worry about them, it must be their voluntary and independent decision to step out of poverty, and walk away from dependence upon government programs.

Gail Gitcho, the communications director for Mr. Romney, said in a statement that Mr. Romney is “concerned about the growing number of people who are dependent on the federal government, including the record number of people who are on food stamps, nearly one in six Americans in poverty, and the 23 million Americans who are struggling to find work.”

Liberalism does not encourage optimism, but instead calls for people to fall into the hole of poverty and government dependence. Conservatism encourages individuality, and achievement - the American Dream that anyone can achieve success if the work goes into the opportunity.

You can build it in America, is Romney's message. You have the freedom to go for it, if you are just willing to try.
