Anti-Christian Forces Begin their 2012 War on Thanksgiving and Christmas

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Each year the attempt to take away the religious freedoms of Christians in the United States gets more and more vicious. The date the attacks begin arise earlier and earlier each year.

The anti-Christian push coincides with the push to make the United States a socialist country, fueled primarily by an educational system infiltrated and controlled by progressives for over a century, a media that is now "all in" in their support for the American move away from the foundational principles that made this nation great, and a political system that has not only moved decisively to the left, but has convinced the GOP that the only way the party can survive is to become more like its opposition.  Americans have decided that Christian inspired Americanism, including principles like self-reliance, personal responsibility, individualism, capitalism, and a high moral standard, are no longer for them.

The Thanksgiving holiday, made national by George Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation, and made official in 1863, dates back to the early colonies. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies.  The purpose of these celebrations was to thank God for the survival of the colonists, and ultimately for the prosperity of the nation.

In early America the relationship between the native population and the British Colonists was often strained.  The British Colonists, however, strove for co-existence, as opposed to the slaughter of the native population by the Spanish Conquistadors.  The first Thanksgiving was a celebration of that co-existence.

Today, however, history has been re-written, and to protest the alleged genocide by the colonists, we are seeing a larger effort to protest Thanksgiving - but I think the real target is God, and the attempt to remove Him from the American story.

Christmas receives greater opposition each year, where the idea of Separation of Church and State, a concept defined by secularists, rather than original intent by the Founding Fathers, has enabled governments to outlaw Christmas public scenes under the guise of protecting the government from religion.  In reality, the founders believed in Divine Providence. They believed that God was a key component in the victory of the colonies over the British Empire in the American Revolution.  Benjamin Franklin asked during the Constitutional Convention when during the first five weeks nothing was getting done, why during the war they were willing to drop to their knees in prayer, but not during the convention.  The delegates proceeded to the nearest church for prayer, and Franklin's recommendation that they pray before each session was adopted later for Congress.

The Founding Fathers did not believe that government needed to be protected from religion, but that religious freedoms needed to be protected from government.

In the 1830s, Alexis de Tocqueville was amazed how in America the politicians prayed, and the pastors preached politics, yet the government did not control the church, and religion did not dictate terms to the government.  The American system that was basically a symbiotic relationship between religion and government was a foreign concept to someone like Tocqueville who was a Frenchman.  In Europe, the problem of big government, and an intrusive religious establishment, was the norm.

The United States of America was unlike Europe, exceptional when it came to the relationship between religion and the government.  God's presence in our system is what has enabled the Constitution to stand the test of time.  The willingness to thank God on Thanksgiving, and consider Divine Providence as the engine behind the exceptionalism of this nation is what fuels our liberty.  Statism is anchored in secularism, because big government can't survive with a competitive force like religion.  Other statist systems vowed to eliminate God from their societies, but ultimately communism, Naziism, fascism, and other totalitarian systems failed.  Godless societies are doomed to failure, and the day prayer was removed from our schools, our downward spiral towards Godlessness began.

Capitalism and God has become the enemy in the United States, according to the liberal left, and their ideology of progressivism is behind the effort to drive God out of our system.  They use every tool available to make the attempt to remove God from our society, from economic upheaval to direct attacks against religion.  Obamacare is designed to compromise religion by forcing religious institutions to provide contraceptives, including the abortion pill, against their religious convictions. Financial pressure alone has a lot of Americans willing to skip the Christmas Season altogether.  In Santa Monica a judge has already denied a bid for Nativity displays.  Children have been disallowed from praying on the steps of the Supreme Court.  At this rate, I am half expecting society to head in the direction of the Twilight Zone's "Obsolete Man," where Burgess Meredith's character resorted to hiding his Bible in a safe, because the Scripture had become contraband in his fictional world of the future.

The goal of the leftists is to contain religion inside the four walls of the church, and to not allow it to reach out beyond the church grounds. Ultimately, they want to eliminate the Christian Faith altogether.

The war against God has continues, and it is more than just a battle over religious freedoms - we are faced with a war over the soul of America.
