More Troops to Iraq

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Barack Obama campaigned on getting the United States military out of Iraq, and ending any military operations in the country.  Now, he is sending troops back into Iraq.  Is it a good thing?  Is it a bad thing?  Is it hypocrisy, or a necessary move against a bloodthirsty enemy that must be stopped?

Is it enough?  Or is it too little, too late?

Or is Barack Obama sending those personnel to their death?

President Obama announced Tuesday he is sending approximately 350 additional military personnel that will not serve in a combat role to Iraq to protect U.S. diplomatic facilities and workers in Baghdad.

It's sort of like sending unarmed National Guardsmen to the southern border, and telling them not to engage the enemy.

Obama is still consulting with international officials rather than his own Congress, hoping to develop a coalition that can. . . fight?  Or negotiate?

The announcement by President Obama came after U.S. military officials said that an airstrike against Islamic State militants in Iraq had damaged or destroyed 16 armed vehicles near the Mosul Dam.

As the Islamic State prepares for bigger targets, and more beheadings.
