Responding to a Student, and Michael Savage: Protecting Israel, despite. . .

By Douglas V. Gibbs

During last Tuesday's Constitution Class, an attendee question a statement I said about the War in Iraq, and whether or not it was wise of President George W. Bush to wage that war.

He then sent me an email with an article from Michael Savage pasted into his email.  The Savage article is as follows:

Israel is as corrupt a nation as you could ever find

Welcome to The Michael Savage Newsletter, your daily insider report on all things "Savage."

In today's issue: Proving once again that he's the most independent thinker on talk radio today, Dr. Savage warned conservatives not to put the state of Israel on a pedestal.

The Jewish state, he explained, is comprised of human beings and is therefore just as flawed as any other country – sometimes even more so.

"Many conservatives believe that America is obligated to support Israel for reasons that go back to the Bible," said Savage.
They believe that if America ever ceases to support the Jewish state 100 percent, the United States will be doomed.

But we have to add a caveat.

Israel is about as corrupt a nation as you could ever find.

If you think there's corruption here, you're right.

But don't live in the dream world that insists that Israel is clean because it's a Jewish state.

You're wrong.

Israel is as mired in corruption as the worst Democrat machine New York City has ever seen.

Let's not look to Israel as an example of a clean nation.

It's falling apart as a result of its own corruption, if you want to know the truth.

Here is how I responded:

Israel is a country battling for its identity no different than the United States, with its leftists, as well as traditionalists, and all points in between. However, we don't define America based on the rhetoric or actions of the progressives, atheists, or new age nuts, and so we shouldn't do the same to Israel when it comes to the "Zionists" that Michael Savage speaks of, leftist Israelites, or those that follow mysticism like Kabbalah in the country. Israel is not a country dominated by any particular ideology, but is in a constant battle between the two sides of left and right, just as we are. Despite the corruption, the leftism, and the rest, the fact is that Israel has been our ally, and in my opinion Israel is our closest ally. They are the lone stabilizing factor in the Middle East. Without Israel keeping much of the Islamic madness in check with its strong military, and willingness to strike against Muslim countries if needed, we would be in big trouble. Israel has kept the caliphate from growing into a worldwide monster merely by her presence in the region.

As for the War in Iraq, as we began to discuss on Tuesday, there were weapons of mass destruction in Saddam Hussein's possession, but like the kids that realize the cops are on the way to their bong party and then hides all of the drug paraphernalia before the police arrive, we telegraphed what we were going to do, and Hussein shipped most of the evidence out of country (I believe most of it went to Syria). There was a growing danger in Iraq, and Hussein, I believe, was not afraid to use his biological, and potentially nuclear, arsenal against Israel, Europe, and American targets in the region. The problem, in my opinion, is not whether or not we should have been in Iraq, but how it was orchestrated.

We have become so politically correct and overly careful that we went into the region walking on pins and needles. We should have kept our intentions secret, gained intelligence about the WMD sites, then, in the dead of night, went in with a massive invasion, destroyed the targets intelligence had revealed the locations of, and then departed. . . leaving Hussein in power.

The funny thing about Islamic dictators is that the secular ones keep the jihadist crazies at bay. Removing Hussein created a void, and now the Islamic crazies are filling that void. . . just as they are doing in Libya, Egypt, Syria, and now Yemen.

Finally, as a Christian, I believe we needed to go into Iraq to protect Israel. If our reason was to spread "democracy", we went in for the wrong reason. Tribal Muslim society is currently unable to have a system like ours. (As a side note, "democracy" is a dangerous system, and simply a transitional government for tyranny - what they all need are "republics"). I see it as imperative that we protect Israel (despite the fact that Russian Jews, Zionists, and Kabbalah mysticism Jews are included in that package). From a biblical standpoint, it is spiritually suicidal for the United States to turn its back on Israel. Unfortunately, that is exactly what the current leadership, and many Americans, are beginning to do.

I hope this clarifies my position.

Blessings,
