Standing in front of a dominantly Muslim crowd in Turkey, President Barack Obama declared that America is not a Christian nation. The fact that he would say such a thing comes to no surprise for a few reasons, and is nothing new. In 2007 Obama gladly declared "Whatever we once were, we're no longer a Christian nation."
This, coming from a man claiming to be a devout Christian, was unsettling to a large number of Americans. President Obama telling the Turks, "I am one of them," when referring to Muslim heritage, in addition to stating that America is not a Christian nation, was hardly unsettling to those that claim Radical Islam, and wish to bring down America. In fact, his dangerous proclamation was a sign of weakness, and submission, to the radical Islamic enemy that is determined to bring down the West.
As Easter 2009 approaches the claim by the humanistic left that not only are we not a Christian nation, but never was, becomes more and more rooted in their rabid fantasies. The reality of history is not only becoming ignored by some, but is literally being rewritten by those that hope to benefit from the death of religion, specifically Christianity, in America.
For Christians, the percentage of how many people are believers in Jesus Christ is not a concern from a political point of view. It is, however, extremely motivated from the point of view of Salvation. After all, Christianity does not proclaim the Salvation of Christ for political reasons. The teaching of Christ is motivated by the calling of the Lord to spread the Word to as many as can hear so that none may perish without Him. The motivation is of deep concern for one's fellow humans. The reason for spreading the Gospel is love.
Despite Liberal Secular opinion, the Christian Right does not desire a theocracy, nor do Christians desire that all people be "forced" into following Biblically based doctrine. Radical Islam may have that kind of agenda, but Christianity, when the Faith is based on Scripture, never has. One of the primary teachings of the Holy Bible is mankind's free will to choose between good and evil. Evangelical interest in politics is not an attempt to Christianize our government, but rather is an attempt to bring attention to those individuals in government that wish to squash freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and the right for Christians to assemble and worship freely through the creation of policies that are radically opposed to Christian freedoms. Coincidentally, these people that wish to destroy Christianity, and the rights that accompany such principles and values, are the same people that fervently support the Liberal Left Democrats, and agendas bent on the destruction of The Church.
Historically, the Founding Fathers came from an environment where the government was essentially a theocratic dictatorship. The King, using the suggestions (or should I say "demands") of The Church of England to rule, demanded that all persons in the kingdom be members of The Church of England. Failure to comply could result in arrest, torture, and sometimes even death. This was motivation enough for the creators of America in The New World to not desire a Federal Government managed in a theocratic manner.
Early America's fear of King-led theocracies, however, does not automatically mean that the Founding Fathers desired the extreme opposite, either. They were deeply rooted in Faith. Though accused of being simply a deist, Thomas Jefferson invoked the name of Jesus Christ often in speeches, letters to his wife and colleagues, and in casual conversation. It is hard to believe that someone accused of being opposed to the belief in Jesus Christ would use the name of the Lord so many times in his day to day dealings.
The Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution are filled with references to the Almighty God, as well. In fact, in the book The Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States by Benjamin F. Morris (1864) the argument is presented that the founding of this nation was full of the evidences of the molding presence of Christian truth, and of the power and goodness of Divine wisdom in rearing up a Christian republic for all time. The book, written long before America reached its one hundredth birthday, claims that Christianity was the spirit and aim of the early founders of our institutions in this nation.
No other nation has used Christian principles and values as the primary foundation of their nation's political system. It is for this reason that America has risen up as exceptional, prosperous, and blessed. The Judeo-Christian roots of this nation were the basis for our laws, capitalistic economy, and tendencies to be the nation first in the efforts to help around the world when disaster strikes.
If more people in America, based on vicious attacks of Christianity by the hard left, turn away from Christianity, it will never change the fact that our nation achieved greatness as a result of Judeo-Christian principles and values. To turn away from our foundation would be to turn away from what enabled this nation to achieve greatness. Abandoning our Judeo-Christian roots will not change the fact that the foundations of this nation were based on those roots, but abandoning our trust in God will send this nation into a disastrous direction the Founding Fathers never intended.
Matthew 10:22 and Luke 21:17 capture Jesus Christ's words about our day and times. The verses indicate that we will be hated for the sake of His name. By abandoning Him we are ensuring America's decline. We are creating an immoral quagmire that we may not be able to pull out of without the benefit of a nationwide revival. It doesn't pay to be moral, or to cling to our God and Bible, so say those that become violently angry at the very mention of Christianity, God, or Jesus Christ.
America was once a nation that enjoyed private property rights, limited government, and a trust in God that enabled her to become strong and prosperous. Now, as Godless socialism pervades our expanding government, immorality washes through our society, and our enemies become emboldened by our weakness that has resulted from degradation, one must ask a very important question: Is Losing God Worth It?
