Senate Finance Committee and the Secret Text of the Health Care Bill

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The Baucus Bill has cleared a hurdle (a very short hurdle at that), making its way through the Senate Finance Committee. The text is not available (they made that mistake before - when people could see what was in it they spoke out against it) and it is being shoved through whether you like it or not.

The new health care bill is a merging of two bills, both written by Democrats without any GOP consideration, in the hopes of gaining the 60 votes necessary to guarantee passage, to overcome a Republican filibuster.

Under fire that the old bill contained a public option, and a requirement that employers offer coverage, the new bill only requires that all Americans obtain insurance, or be subject to a fine (tax) for non-compliance.

During the vote, the female version of Arlen Specter (Olympia Snowe of Maine who is known for her "progressive" politics) broke ranks and joined the communists (err, uhh, Democrats) in the vote.

Finance Committee Republicans claimed the bill contained higher taxes, and more government control of health care in America.
