A preliminary magnitude of 7.0 is being given to the strongest earthquake in more than 200 years to strike Haiti. A number of strong after-shocks followed the quake, and continue.
The U.S. Government has offered aid, and prayer. Emergency relief is being offered by a number of organizations who are currently attempting to assess the needs.
Communications are down, so a full assessment has been hampered. Electricity is also down in many places.
A number of buildings are down, some are nothing more than a pile of rubble. As a result of the total destruction, a serious loss of life is predicted. Many Haitians are buried under the rubble.
The earthquake centered about 10 miles west of the small nation's capital, Port-au-Prince, at a shallow depth of 5 miles. The U.S. Geological Survey says this is the strongest quake to hit Haiti since 1770.
