American Troops Pulling Out of Haiti

By Douglas V. Gibbs

As the American troops pack up to depart from Haiti, the locals are fast realizing that the international aid coming in may be coming to an end.

The United Nations peacekeepers will remain behind, but their effectiveness in keeping order is being questioned.

U.S. officials have indicated that the departure of the troops does not signify a lack of commitment to Haiti, only a change in the operation from a strong American presence, to a strong U.N. peacekeeping force.

Some members of the U.S. Military will remain behind to assist the U.N. force, and the Haitian government, to maintain control.

The mission, which began in the immediate aftermath of the massive earthquake that hit Haiti a few weeks ago, has ended.

The security of the country is now in the hands of the U.N., and local authorities, as it should be.
