Over 500 Christians have been slain in the mass killings of Christians in Nigeria. The Machete-wielding Muslims chopped down their victims during a three hour episode of violence in three Christian villages. The atrocity is being blamed on members of the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group.
Media is reporting that the Muslim residents of the villages were warned two days ahead of time by phone text message. While the massacre was happening, to ensure a separation of the Fulanis from members of the rival Berom group, the murders chanted 'nagge', the Fulani word for cattle. Those who failed to respond in the same language were hacked to death.
One local paper said the gangs shouted Allah Akhbar (God is Great) before breaking into homes and setting them afire in the early hours of Sunday morning. Christian Churches were among the buildings that were burned down.
The victims were not limited to men, but children and women as well.
This is yet another episode in a series of attacks in this part of Nigeria between rival ethnic and religious groups. In January 326 people died in clashes, some estimating those deaths to actually be at more than 550.
Members of the Plateau State Christian Elders Consulatative Forum (PSCEF) say this is a Jihad related killing. Other religious leaders say that the violence is actually rooted not in religion, but in social, economic and tribal differences. I find that position to be very naive of Quranic teachings, and the ongoing war Islam is waging against non-Muslims, and specifically Jews and Christians.
