Russian Adoption Scandal Raises Questions

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The story is, the woman adopted a child from Russia, the kid turned out to be a pain in the butt, and she sent him back to Moscow. Now she faces an investigation, could possibly have some legal troubles as a result, and Russia is halting adoptions to The States as a result, triggering a bunch of important people to go to Moscow to plead with Russia not to close out the adoption option of Russian kids for Americans.

Why are these Americans so eager to adopt Russian kids when in America there is a waiting list for children hoping for homes?

As for the woman being so eager to send the child back to Russia, to me it seems like the same throw-away mentality that fuels abortion. Can't people make decisions, and then live through the consequences, good or bad? People toss away marriages with ease, children with ease, and anything else that bothers them. Commitment seems to be a thing of the past, I suppose.

I get it, the Russian boy was a complete lunatic, and the woman claims the folks that sent her the child lied to her about the kid's mental well-being. What did she expect from a kid coming from another country, in a situation where she has no idea what the kid is truly about until he's in America? Does this woman fall for the Nigerian Lotto Spam E-mails too?

It bothers me that U.S. officials have gone to Russia to beg that they allow adoptions to continue. We have children in America searching for homes, waiting in foster care hoping for someone to adopt them. Why can't these people adopt an American child? Why are they willing to blindly take a chance on bringing a foreign child here to a completely unknown environment?

I know, they have big hearts, and want to give these poor international children a good American home - but what about the untold numbers of American children who desire a good American home. What about them?
