Arizona Threatens to Cut Power to L.A. Over Boycott

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The Arizona Immigration Law, SB 1070, encouraged Los Angeles to call for a boycott of Arizona. But L.A.'s dependency on Arizona for a portion of its water and power may be the California city's undoing. As Los Angeles faces an economic crisis that has the city spiraling toward bankruptcy, it is important to remember that Los Angeles gets as much as 25 percent of its electricity from Arizona power plants.

After L.A.'s mayor called for boycott, Arizona responded with a threat to cut power to Los Angeles, which would force L.A. to buy electricity from other more expensive sources - in turn increasing electricity rates at a time when such an increase could be devastating to the populace.
