To baseball fans Kevin Kennedy is "The Skipper," having managed in the big leagues during four seasons. He was also a voice on ESPN's various baseball programs, as well as a co-host Prime Ticket's "Dodgers Live" in California, and a frequent visitor to Angels' broadcasts on Fox Sports West. Now, a broadcaster for the Tampa Bay Rays, Kevin Kennedy found himself in an unexpected role aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to Florida.
During Kennedy's flight, a passenger sprayed the first-class cabin with a water bottle, tried to open a cabin door and threatened to blow up the aircraft. After trying to talk the individual down, Kennedy, and a number of other passengers, subdued Stanley Dwayne Sheffield, possibly saving Delta flight 214 from falling victim to a senseless demise brought about by Sheffield.
When Kennedy told his tale last night on the Angels of Anaheim broadcast after the game, his modesty and humility was all too recognizable. That makes Mr. Kennedy a hero in my book, for he did what he did because it needed to be done, and for no other reason. He set aside his own well-being for the safety of others, and he did it for no reason other than the importance of doing it, and for that Kevin Kennedy deserves a new nickname: "Hero."
