Partisan Politics a la Liberals

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Ronald Reagan, when referring to his past membership in the Democrat Party, said "I didn't leave the Democrat Party, the Democrat Party left me."

The journey leftward has accelerated recently, so much so that folks that would have been considered hard left only fifty years ago are now centrists that must be gotten rid of.

The Democrats have long accused Republicans as being the party of partisan politics, and proclaimed the GOP to be hijacked by extremists as the Tea Party movement, and the rise of conservatism, has worked to return the GOP to its roots.

Interestingly enough, hard left progressive groups are doing all they can to cleanse the Democrat Party of anyone that isn't neurotically to the Left, and one such example of ideological cleansing in the party of the jackass is going on in California where a national progressive group, Democracy for America, is supporting the challenger of Representative Jane Harman because they believe her to be too centrist.

So, now, which party has been hijacked by extreme radicals?

Democracy for America was founded by former Vermont governor and Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean, and their announcement that they are endorsing hard left liberal socialist Marcy Winograd, who is running against Harman in California's June 8 primary, is reminding us who the crazies truly are.

Harman, in office and representing the Los Angeles beach area since 1993, has been criticized by the liberals in the past because of her vote to support the Iraq war, which pretty much all of the Democrats did do, and for her backing of George W. Bush's several intelligence and homeland security policies.

Harman has the California Democratic Party's endorsement, but the true test will be the primary where the voters will choose between Winograd and Harmon to represent them in the November election.

Harman joins a growing list of moderate Democratic lawmakers who have been targeted this year by progressive groups; yet recently in West Virginia the voters chose a more conservative Mike Oliverio in the state's first district over incumbent liberal, Alan Mollohan, which is but one of many examples that the progressives are not in line with the majority of Democrat voters, and that the Tea Party movement has crossed party lines.
