Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN) Discusses Oil Spill with Chris Matthews

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Let me qualify something real quick before you watch the video below. As do most liberals, it is apparent that Chris Matthews does not understand what big government and small government is to Conservatives. Chris, like his leftist counterparts, believes it is literally big or small. Therefore, any regulations by the federal government must be big government, therefore the Right must be against it.

The definition is that big government is a federal government that extends its authorities beyond the powers given to it by the U.S. Constitution. BP's oil spill happened outside state waters in U.S. waters, placing it under the authority of the U.S. Government. Therefore, regulations by the federal government on such rigs is within their authority. In other words, in the Constitutional scheme of things, those regulations would be perfectly acceptable and Constitutional.

The problem lies with a number of other factors, such as how the federal government is handling this situation. The White House has been spending all of its time placing blame, and not taking action. And when I say take action, I mean as a partner with BP to clean it up, not a dictatorial controller threatening to kick someone's ass.

And we must also reason that if government's regulations are so good, then why did the accident happen in the first place? And if deep water drilling is so bad, then why did BP feel it necessary to drill out there in the first place? Could it be that regulations prohibit drilling in safer areas? Could it be that they drilled out in the deep sea areas because government would not let them drill on land, or in shallower water?

Okay, now to the video:
