Crown Fire Contained, Fire Season in California Commences

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The Los Angeles Basin has remained smoke free, for the most part. But the mountains between the Los Angeles metropolitan area and the desert area to the northeast have been hazy from the smoke of the Crown Fire.

After 14,000 acres burned, firefighters gained containment of the first major fire of the season.

Firefighters have worked endlessly constructing additional containment lines, extinguishing embers and patrolling burn areas, and it has paid off.

After experiencing humidity, high temperatures, and high winds recently, the region in the last week has been experiencing low humidity and calmer winds, which has aided the firefighters in battling the blaze.

At one point the fire threatened more than 2,000 homes. 1,700 firefighters have fought this blaze, as well as several water-dropping helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and a DC-10 air tanker.

This is the first major blaze of the season.
