Mexican Drug Cartels: Why Jump the Border When We Can Use Tunnels?

By Douglas V. Gibbs

After receiving a call from an anonymous source, the Baja California state police found a tunnel leading from a house in Mexicali toward the U.S. border. After investigating the tunnel, the officers found themselves arriving at a house on Madero Avenue in Calexico, California.

The tunnel is 77 feet long, 5 feet high and 4 feet wide.

No suspects have been found, but the belief is the tunnel has been used for transporting drugs and illegal immigrants into the United States; and bringing weapons and laundered money into Mexico.

The Calexico Police Department, Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been alerted to the tunnel.

The Baja California state police have been consistently cooperating with American authorities regarding border tunnels. It is also a Mexican federal offense to dig border tunnels.
