U.S. and South Korea Engage in Military Exercises in Yellow Sea
By Douglas V. Gibbs
When I was in the United States Navy the American vessels worked with South Korean vessels in an exercise called "Team Spirit." The year was 1986, and it was training operations as usual.
Now, the United States and South Korea have announced that there will be a military training exercises that will be held in the Yellow Sea early next month. The operations will be primarily in anti-submarine warfare.
This upcoming exercise is thought to be directly connected to concern that has been present since a North Korean submarine sank the South Korean frigate Cheonan last March. The goal is to demonstrate to North Korea the solidarity of the American alliance with South Korea.
The exercise, as was Team Spirit so long ago, will be conducted in international waters. The exercise is for training purposes, to ensure the readiness of both forces, and to remind North Korea that making a military move against South Korea would not be wise.
