Peter Lenz Motorcycle Accident Spurs Debate Over Young Riders

By Douglas V. Gibbs

13-year-old motorcycle racing champ Peter Lenz is dead. He fell off of his bike during warm-ups, and another rider ran him over. Lenz had been riding motorcycles since he was five years old, winning nine national championships in his riding career, but some argue he was too young for such a dangerous sport.

The accident was tragic. There is no arguing that point. But the child, and his parents, knew the risks. That is a part of competition, and living life. I would prefer him out there doing what he loves, then sitting in some bubble somewhere too afraid to go out there because the nanny-state'rs believe the world is just too dangerous.

Besides, imagine how many deaths would occur if these kids did not grow up around motorcycles, and gain the skills over their lives - then suddenly jump on a bike later in life?

Take you sons motorcycle riding, take them hunting, and let them compete in whatever they wish to compete in. Life is full of risks, and of course we would prefer that tragedy not befall them; but if we are going to be afraid of letting them experience life, then why even let them out the front door?
