Muslims Attack NATO Oil Tankers

By Douglas V. Gibbs

In southwestern Pakistan a group of armed Islamists have set fire using rockets to nearly 30 tankers carrying fuel for NATO troops in Afghanistan. The pre-dawn attack occurred outside of a restaurant in the area of Mithri, where the 29 tankers were parked. The attack is the latest in a string of attacks designed to cut off the supply line to the international troops fighting in Afghanistan.

Extinguishing the fire has now become the primary focus.

The Islamists fired upon responding police. Two local law enforcement personnel were injured, one from the gunfire, and the other from the blaze. After the exchange of gunfire, the attackers fled.

Since an incident on September 30th when a NATO helicopter strike killed two Pakistani border guards, there has been several attacks on supply convoys. One of those supply line attacks resulted in the destruction of 70 fuel tankers, and the death of one of the drivers. The Pakistani Taliban usually claims responsibility for the attacks.
