The Anaheim Angels' 2009 season began with the tragic news of the death of Nick Adenhart, an up and coming pitcher that had been showing great promise after his debut. The celebration of Adenhart's great pitching performance of six scoreless innings ended on April 9, 2009 when Andrew Gallo, driving drunk, ran a red light and killed Adenhart, two other passengers in the vehicle with the Angels' pitcher, and seriously injured a fourth passenger.
The construction worker was on probation for felony drunken driving when the collision occurred.
On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Mr. Gallo to 51 years to life in prison.
Prosecutors said Gallo's blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit on the night he blew through the intersection that killed Nick Adenhart.
The conviction in September included three counts of second-degree murder and single counts of drunken driving, hit-and-run driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol and causing great bodily injury.
"His conduct showed a complete disregard for the safety of others," Deputy District Attorney Susan Price said in court papers filed before the hearing.
Even though Gallo was on probation for drunk driving, the night of the collision he had spent hours drinking beer and shots at three different bars with his stepbrother before driving off in the family's minivan.
The stepbrother was supposed to have been the designated driver, but he wound up too drunk to drive too, so Gallo decided to take the wheel instead.
Personally, I think 51 years is too short of a sentence.
