In Maryland a rescue attempt to save a trapped deer in icy water, which turned out to be an effort by a number of folks, resulted in saving the life of the trapped deer, and a fine for not wearing life vests during the operation.
People with no connection to each other worked together in a true effort of community spirit pulling the deer out of freezing water after realizing the poor animal was trapped in the partially frozen Patapsco River. The river surface was only starting to freeze when the deer fell in, and the good Samaritans rushed into action once they realized the animal's life was in danger.
They used oars and shovels to break the ice, clearing a path for the deer to escape the frigid waters. And during the excitement of success after the end of the rescue effort, a Natural Resources Police officer on the scene started quietly writing tickets.
They were ticketed for not wearing life vests, although both of the men receiving citations are over the age for mandatory use of flotation devices.
The two men who were cited plan to fight the tickets at a court hearing in Annapolis in February.
