The captain of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise was permanently relieved of his command Tuesday for making a series of ribald and offensive videos that aired on the ship's closed-circuit television system when he was the second-in-command several years ago.
Much of the content of the videos are considered to be offensive to gays.
If the captain was gay, he would have been congratulated for the videos, labeled as couragious, and would have possibly gotten a promotion.
One thing is for sure, to make videos of the like, regardless of whether or not the material is "offensive," is unbecoming of an officer. Though I do not believe he should have lost his command over this, making videos that I would expect more from 20 year old frat boys is not becoming of a superior officer.
If there must be a punishment, it should be for the offense of acting inappropriately as a senior officer, not because of the nature of the videos.

And Doug it was because of his conduct , "Conduct not becoming that of an Officer and a Gentleman" that he was relived of his command. Regardless of the content of the videos his conduct was not in line with that of a officer, much less a commander of men. While his actions were perhaps in his mind, "fun" and to let off steam, they were never the less totally wrong and showed a lack of forethought and good judgment. Who is to say that this same lack of good judgment could not have someday cost lives. Given that, I would not want to serve under his command due to his lack of judgment in such a seemingly trivial(to some) matter.
Actions have consequences and he learned that they can be hell, the hard way. I commend those who relieved him of his command.
I don't understand your distinction.
ReplyDeleteCapt he acted inappropriately BECAUSE of the nature of his videos - in which he not only played a starring role, but that he broadcast on the ship's TV channel.

ReplyDeleteWhich bit would he have been congratualted for? The "Hot chicks in the shower" clip? The "rectal exam"?
It's unworthy by any analysis. Even for horrible gay people.
