Cash Strapped Universities in California Seek Out-Of-State Students
By Douglas V. Gibbs
It is all about the money, and the University of California system needs gobs of it. Therefore, the local university system is not seeking local students, because they just don't pay that much to attend. The University of California system is looking for out-of-state solutions to its money problems.
California, facing a monumental fiscal crisis, has been cutting state funding to the ten campus system, so the University of California system is pushing to recruit high-paying students from other states and countries, despite the fact that right now a record number of California students seek a University of California education.
The universities are chasing money, and happily for them, the last two years have been good. System officials are reporting that out-of-state and international students admissions have been on the rise, which means mo money, mo money, mo money.
University of California universities charge students from outside California nearly $35,000 in annual tuition, about three times what state residents pay.
Of course, Californians are becoming resentful. California students and families have worked for years to gain admission to one of the country's top public university systems, and now they are being told that their own university system would rather pursue students from out of state.
