Thaddeus McCotter's Presidential Run - and His Union Ties

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Thaddeus McCotter is a true conservative. . . kind of.

Ever since Congressman McCotter decided to throw his hat in the ring for President of the United States, many conservatives have been excited. He talks a good game, he sounds conservative, and he has a personality the folks can relate to.

All candidates have their flaws. Some flaws are large, some are small, but in McCotter's case, his flaw is the size of a few labor unions.

McCotter has a history of being pro-union, and his history of supporting the labor unions may make him difficult for conservative voters to like.

His dilemma is that if he doesn't cut his union ties, conservatives won't give him the time of day; if he does, it will be assumed he changed his position for political reasons.

McCotter's best bet is to cut his ties with the unions now, start creating a voting record more in line to the conservative message, and then consider running in a presidential campaign a few elections down the road.

  1. TMac can has spoken on unions. The good and the bad. It's crucial we understand both. Reagan did. The stakes are too high to let the perfect be the enemy of the great.
