Amanda Knox Freed by Italian Courts

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Originally handed a 26 year sentence for the murder of her British roommate in Italy in 2007, American student Amanda Knox was cleared of most charges and freed by an appeals court. Also cleared of most charges was her co-defendant, Raffaele Sollecito.

One charge remained. The court upheld Ms. Knox’s conviction for defamation, or falsely accusing another person in the case. The sentence for that charge is three years in prison, of which she has already served. She was also ordered to pay court costs.
