NTSB: Full Ban of Cell Phones While Driving

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The National Transportation Safety Board has decided it is time for the federal government to save you from yourself. The federal agency has called for a nationwide ban on the use of cell phones and text messaging devices while driving.

The use of cell phones and texting do distract drivers, and in this article I am in no way questioning the wisdom of people not using their phones while driving without a hands free device, and without texting.

That said, the problem with the NTSB trying to ban such use nationwide is not only unconstitutional because the federal government was never granted that authority (making it a state issue), but whenever you have the federal government trying to micromanage our lives, it opens up a can of worms that the federal government may use to further control our lives.

Does the NTSB see themselves as wise, and individuals foolish? Do they think it is their duty to force people to be reasonable?

With freedom comes responsibility, and if we can't be responsible then we deserve the consequences. If it is so important that government needs to pass laws to get this under control, then the local governments ought to do so. If the people don't like it, then change it at the local level.
