Syria Pipeline Explosion

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Syria's violence has struck the nations highway of pipelines again. Today, an explosion hit a Syrian gas pipeline in a region staunchly opposed to Assad's rule. Armed terrorist groups bombed the pipeline, and a resulting fire continues. No deaths have been reported.

Demonstrations against President Bashar al-Assad's regime has been raging for months, echoing the unrest against tyrannical regimes that has been raging through the Muslim World.

The pipeline targeted by the blast carries gas between the towns of Rastan and Talbisseh in the province of Homs.

This is the fourth attack on the energy infrastructure since the outbreak of violence last March.

Syria's oil output has suffered during the unrest, slumping to 120,000 barrels per day from 340,000 barrels per day before the unrest. It is estimated that over 5,000 people have been killed during this period of Syrian violence.
