Arpaio Battles Federal Government Over Illegal Aliens

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The federal government has decided that local jailers can't check whether inmates have entered this country illegally. Therefore, after The Department of Homeland Security announced that Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jail officers could no longer check whether inmates were in the country illegally, dozens of Arpaio's jail officers handed in their federal credentials. Arpaio stated that he expected the federal government to live up to its promise to send federal agents to perform the screening in his jail.

I have a sneaking suspicion the federal government will not follow through, and illegal aliens will not be deported. They will wind up back on our streets. Arpaio has voiced that he believes the same. The federal government is failing to live up to their constitutional responsibility to protect the States from invasion (Article IV, Section 4), and are unconstitutionally disallowing the States to live up to their end of this concurrent power.

Allegations against the Arizona sheriff for the mistreatment of illegals has been denied by Arpaio.
