First Victim of Hurricane Isaac is Day One of the Republican National Convention

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Tampa is on the eastern edge of the storm, but Hurricane Isaac still has enough bite on the Florida peninsula that the Republican National Committee has decided to cancel the first day of the GOP convention. The hurricane passes by tonight, leaving Tampa with hazardous conditions for delegates throughout tomorrow.

The activities scheduled for the first day are being postponed, but the revised schedule has not yet been settled. One change that is known is that Romney will now be formally nominated as the Republican Party's presidential candidate on Tuesday instead of Monday. Some speakers will lose their speaking slots.

Isaac is expected to reach hurricane strength today, and could slam into the Gulf Coast as early as Tuesday. As a tropical storm, Isaac killed seven people in Haiti, and caused some damage in Cuba.

Though the hurricane will not hit Tampa head on, it is believed the storm can still inflict significant damage.
Some republicans welcome the storm, figuring it will keep the riff-raff, like the New Black Panthers, out of Tampa during the convention.
