Losing the War on Poverty - Welfare Spending Jumps Under Obama's Watch

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Talking about GOP Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney on August 14, 2012, Vice President Joe Biden said to a dominantly black audience, "He is going to let the big banks once again write their own rules, unchain Wall Street. He is going to put y'all back in chains."

Biden's message was clear: The free market enslaves you, and government-control of the private sector frees you from slavery.

Progressive policies of big government do more than try to control the private sector. Their policies work to control individuals too, not only to create a society based on a Marxist philosophy where everyone is the same faceless member of the worker class, but to create a loyal under-class of voters who are more concerned about the gifts they will receive from the public treasury, than any political issue regarding the welfare of the nation.

The liberal left's attempt to create utopia fails every time it has been tried.  The Great Society has become The Dependent Society.  President Lyndon B. Johnson declared war on poverty by initiating radical social reform programs, expanding the already failing New Deal programs put into place by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt a few decades earlier, while also creating other new government programs aimed at helping the poor.  Johnson believed that poverty is the root of the social ills of society. He believed that poverty simply existed because the government did not provide opportunity to those unable to fully participate in society.  Instead of eliminating poverty, however, the liberal programs instituted has increased the number of poor people in America by encouraging able-bodied, and able-minded, people from being free to produce and trade by simply giving them what they need to minimally survive - using tax dollars, by the way, confiscated from the producers of society. Government control has been a destroyer of opportunity, and has continued the existence of slavery in America.

The bureaucratic approach to solving the problems of society has proven to accomplish the opposite of the liberal left's stated claims, while successfully accomplishing their unstated desire of creating many classes of voters dependent on the Democrat Party for their continued sustenance.

Barack Obama, like Roosevelt and Johnson, believes that government is the answer to whatever ails a society.  He says that opportunity is not available to the poor because there isn't a fair playing field, and his entitlement and social programs level the playing field for those less fortunate. Despite the historical evidence that a bureaucratic approach is a failing one, he has doubled down, and the federal government during Obama's presidency has increased welfare spending by 32%.

Suspending the work requirement for food stamps has taken away any encouragement to seek employment for those using the program, and as a result, the number of participants in the federal food stamp program has also gone up. The number of able-bodied adults on food stamps doubled from 1.9 million in 2008 to 3.9 million in 2010.

The liberal programs pay people to remain poor, without opening doors for improvement by getting out of the way of small businesses.  Economic growth has been stifled by massive government spending, a rise in taxes on not only income, but consumer items and services as well, and a job-killing increase of regulations against businesses that not only prevent new businesses from getting off the ground, but stifles the growth of existing businesses, and in many cases pushes American companies off-shore where the business environment is not so hostile.

The increase of the number of people in poverty, the increase of folks on food stamps, and the increase of welfare spending - combined with the double-digit unemployment rate (U-6 has it at 14.7%) - shows what history has always shown - liberalism fails whenever it is tried. . . and the War on Poverty is a bust. The democrats have ensured that a class of Americans remain in slavery under the iron fist of the federal government, under the guise of helping them.
