For the purpose of protecting his family from any possible catastrophe imaginable, Bernie Jones decided that building an underground bunker on his acre and a half of property in Menifee, California was the sensible thing to do. In other parts of the country, basements and storm shelters are common. Tornadoes, Hurricanes, flooding, ice storms, and a myriad of other natural disasters demand that property owners take precautionary measures to protect their property, themselves, and their families. In Southern California, aside from perhaps flooding, none of those disasters are a concern. Basements and underground shelters are not something Californians have tended to buy into, and almost never is a house built with a basement beneath. That is not to say that there is no potential need for such things, for earthquakes, fierce Santa Ana winds, wildfires, mudslides, and a nuclear power plant at San Onofre present plenty of good reasons for installing shelter to protect oneself, and family, from the looming potential of a massive disaster.
When Bernie Jones decided to hire Protective Bunkers and Survival Center to build an underground bunker, he quickly learned that the structure is carefully engineered, and meets all of the safety requirements at both the State, and federal, level. The planning commission in Menifee unanimously approved the construction of the bunker on Mr. Jones' property. As far as the property owner was concerned, going before the city council to get their approval, since there was no ordinance in place yet allowing or denying the building of an underground bunker in Menifee, would be nothing more than a formality.
One city council member, Greg August, motioned to bring the issue to a vote for approving constructing an ordinance to allow the construction of the bunker, and the other three council members in attendance refused to second the motion.
Personal property rights were shot down, and it wasn't because of some legal entanglement that kept them from moving forward. It was simply because the other three council members believed such a structure is not needed. It didn't matter to them if the citizen felt it was needed, or that because it is an underground bunker, the shelter would not influence Menifee's image as was falsely proclaimed. The reasons used for the rejection ranged from that the underground bunker would enable pedophiles to hide their actions of child molestation, that it could be used as a meth lab (which is silly since such drug production facilities need a free flow of air), or that the owner may (gasp!!!!) hide guns in it.
With that line of thinking, perhaps they ought to ban garages, back bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, recreational vehicles, and public parks.
Interestingly enough, the city does not provide shelters equipped with emergency items for the citizens. Yet, the property owner can't do such for himself.
The reason, though not articulated, is because these council members thinks the property owner is a "prepper," or "survivalist". The left thinks those kinds of folks are just a bit loony, so they have decided it is best not to give in to their crazy whims.
Who cares? It is a free country, and the Founding Fathers held the concept of private property as ranking among the highest of our fundamental rights (right up there with the right to keep and bear arms).
Fast forward to this coming Tuesday Night, May 7, 2013. An effort is being made to make the city council squirm, and get them to revisit this issue, vote on it, and allow Bernie Jones to put his underground bunker into his backyard. The meeting on Tuesday Night begins at 7:00 pm at 29714 Haun Rd., in Menifee. We plan to fill the chambers with folks supporting Bernie, and during the public remarks portion of the meeting, to have citizen after citizen proclaim their displeasure over the city council's blatant disregard for a property owner's fundamental right.
This is going to be fun! Feel free to join us. Turning this nation around includes local involvement, and even if you don't live in Menifee, it is important to attend, because what happens in Menifee today may affect your own city tomorrow.
