Mountain Fire in Southern California Spurs Mass Evacuations

By Douglas V. Gibbs

In the mountains between the Inland Empire and Palm Springs thrives the mountain communities of Mountain Center and Idyllwild.  Near those communities rages a forest fire that is sending up a plume of smoke that can be seen from cities all way from the Los Angeles basin.  The Mountain Fire has destroyed seven structures, and threatens thousands more.  A shift in the winds has created a condition for mandatory evacuations for Idyllwild and Fern Valley, sending thousands to flee from the fire ravaged area as the flames creep ever closer to neighborhoods.

The fire has torched almost 23,000 Acres, and at this time is only 15% contained.  The fire is being fueled by high winds, and plenty of dry vegetation that has not burned in a generation.  The high temperatures of the area are expected to drop this weekend, giving firefighters relief, and hopefully just what they need to begin to gain ground on the blaze.
