Texas House Passes Abortion Bill

BREAKING: Texas House passes ‘pain capable’ 20 week abortion ban at second reading

The Texas State House of Representatives had passed HB2, a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks gestation, would add safety measures for abortion pill distribution, and would require that abortionists maintain hospital privileges within 30 miles of their clinics. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor with 98 yea votes to only 49 nays.

The long day of debate ended at around 8:40 pm when a final vote was taken after lengthy debate on nearly two dozen amendments that threatened to strip the bill of its teeth. All amendments failed and the bill passed intact.

"We are so proud of the people of Texas for standing strong for life and for the protection of women who are preyed upon by unscrupulous abortion clinics that put profit above the lives and health of the women," said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue.

Cheryl Sullenger, Senior Policy Advisor was present in Austin during the debate.

"We felt heavily invested in this piece of legislation after our investigations revealed horrific allegations of illegal late-term abortions and babies killed after being born alive at a Texas abortion clinic, as well as widespread abuses in abortion clinics throughout Texas," said Sullenger. "Today was a victory for us, a victory for women, and most importantly, a victory for the babies whose lives this legislation will save. We are very grateful for today's vote and now look to the Senate to do their part to protect the innocent in Texas."
